Autumn lends a different character to the fifth city of Delhi — Feroz Shah Kotla. Built by Sultan Feroz Shah Tughlaq in 1354, the complex houses the ruins of a grand fortress, a baoli (stepwell), a dungeon, and the mighty Ashokan pillar. At this time of the year — during mausam-e-khizān — when dry leaves rustle underfoot, the soul seeks quietude. Perhaps that is why places like this endure. Once upon a time, storytellers came here from Mehrauli to perform in a city said to be ruled by sultans, fairies, and jinns. Even now, something unseen lingers in the air — half memory, half myth.
