“…Awadh ke paandaan se ik nayi gilauri le kar aayen hain…”
Once upon a time in Awadh, a mighty vizier (wazir) held so much power that even the monarch (badshaah) would tremble before him. The king was but a puppet in the vizier’s hands, and anyone who dared to challenge him found themselves outwitted by his shrewd ploys.
This weekend, let’s sit down at Delhi’s small courtyard of Awadh, the Safdarjung tomb, to unpack a metaphorical game of chess where many pawns play their part.
