From Dil kushaa to Dak Bunglows: Heritage Walk at the Metcalfe House, Mehrauli

“Dak Bangle ka Bhoot aur Anya Kahaniyan”

The Metcalfe House in Mehrauli is a remarkable example of colonial adaptation of Mughal architecture. In the early 19th century, Sir Thomas Metcalfe, the British Resident at the Mughal court, transformed the 17th-century tomb of Muhammad Quli Khan into a country retreat with European-style annexes, landscaped gardens, and ornamental follies, creating a picturesque estate near the Qutub Minar which came to be known as “Dil kushaa” (Delight of the Heart). Much like the Dil kushaa, the dak bunglows of that era, reflected the British desire to blend comfort, control, and surveillance within the Indian landscape.
